Normally I write about Reality TV related stuff but sports is sort of reality TV... right? Well the greatest moment in sports history has just happened and it was also one of the greatest moments in reality TV….sort of. For real! This isn't just hype.
Phillip Wellman is the manager of the Mississippi Braves, a double "A" affiliate of the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball organization. He felt that the umpire working home plate this particular night was being very unfair to his team. The home plate umpire seemed to not care. So Phillip Wellman let the umpire know how he felt about it and got thrown out of the game by that umpire. Well, he didn’t leave quietly. Phillip Wellman threw a tirade so big it held the game hostage until he was ready to leave. It was so outrageous that no one, especially that home plate umpire, will ever forget that night. Was the home plate umpire being unfair to Phillip Wellman’s team or was the home plate umpire just guilty of being sarcastic? Who knows? But to Phillip Wellman and to me, it was the principle of the matter. Phillip Wellman fought back!
After seeing this I have a new hero. If I could go back in time to when Survivor: Cook Island was being played and arrive right after my tribe, my team threw the challenge to get rid of me, what Phillip Wellman did is the sort of thing I would do differently. This is what I should have done. I should have torn that camp apart. I should have put out the camp fire, destroyed the shelter, thrown the machete and flint in the ocean, made the most demonstrous jesters I could come up with, and given my tribe a verbal smack down. I was way too nice. I got abused and I just let it go. Damn! I know better now. Thank You Mississippi Braves manager Phillip Wellman. You proved that we don’t just have to take the wrong that others do to us. That even in defeat we can fight back. Cheers to the Tirade!
