|
03/27/2007 - BB Lane's Paradise chatted with the King of Reality, Jonny Fairplay! Thanks Jonny for doing this fantastic interview with BB Lane!

paradise: Thank so much for doing this interview with me Jonny.
Jonny: You are very welcome!
paradise: Are you ready for some questions?
Jonny: Shoot!
paradise: Where did the name Jonny Fairplay originate?
Jonny: A friend of mine back in North Carolina actually gave me the nickname. When I started TNA wrestling in North Carolina and I was a bad guy manager, and they were like "What's your name?" and I said, "You know what would be appropriate?" "Jonny Fairplay" because it's a misnomer, I don't play fair. So then when I did Survivor I thought I would be Jonny Fairplay on Survivor.
paradise: How real is your TV persona? Are you a different guy off the screen?
Jonny: It just depends. I'm a nice guy most of the time, but I get annoyed just like everyone else does.
paradise: On Survivor it was reported that the plan to say grandma died was launched before the show. If your friend wouldn't have been brought in with that news, how would you have played?
Jonny: I picked the biggest scumbag of a friend that I knew wouldn't chicken out. Thunder D is the biggest scumbag I know other than myself. When I got on the island that first night, everyone was asking me who's your loved one. I said my grandmother, she raised me as a little kid, her favorite show is Survivor, but CBS made me list a back up cause she has cancer. I told the others it was bullshit for them to make me list a back up cause that meant they thought she wasn't gonna make it, and I knew she was gonna make it. So every night people would be praying for my grandmother and I am dying laughing inside. **side note** Her favorite show is Survivor; she didn't raise Jonny as a little kid though. I didn't even tell my grandmother I was going on the show. Once they announced the cast I told her I was on it and what I did. Once the cast was announced you have to pick one person to do your interviews for you until the winner is announced. I picked my Grandmother to do my interviews and in every interview she'd say, " I was thrilled to death to hear Jonny Fairplay was on Survivor" or " I almost died when I saw the show". If anyone had paid attention they would have caught on.
paradise: So I take it your Grandmother wasn't offended at all?
Jonny: No, not at all. In fact I have a brand new Chevy HHR and she has a matching one. My license says Fairplay and hers says DeadGma. She was way cool with it.
paradise: Jeff Probst was quoted as saying "Vanuatu finale after-party pissed me off so much that he's banned from any event that I'm at from now on. I'm done with Jonny Fairplay." What did you do at the after-party that ticked him off so much?
Jonny: I have all the respect in the world for Jeff Probst; I think he is one of the greatest hosts in the history of reality TV. I was an idiot and it was my fault. He had every reason to be upset with me.
paradise: What motivated your friend to take you on Judge Mathis, did he really think you would be a credible witness or did he think it would be funny?
Jonny: I think it was some of the best TV I've done. I knew absolutely nothing about the case and I told the producers that I wouldn't pretend to know. These are friends of mine that I knew in high school and that I really haven't hung out with since and they were on the shady side even then. I told them the reason I am going on is because I think it would be funny as heck to have Jonny Fairplay as a character witness, that is just so ridiculous.
paradise: How did you end up as a regular caller on the XM radio show Ron and Fez?
Jonny: When Ron and Fez were on WJFK in DC I would call in often and plug something, and for some reason they liked me. So when I bought a new car I wanted to get an XM radio because I really like the Ron and Fez show and now they are on XM. I was driving from the car dealership, I called in to Ron and Fez to let them know I got a car with XM just because of them and as I am talking to them the display on my XM radio reads Jonny Fairplay, with 7 miles on my car. How cool is that? I also have a feud with John Mayer I don't know if you are aware of that. Every time I call in to Ron and Fez they are excited to hear from me like "Yay, Jonny Fairplay, we love you". They make it a big deal and I really appreciate it. 30 minutes after I had called in one day John Mayer calls in and the producer says "Hey, we have John Mayer on the line and we are gonna patch him through" They didn't make a big deal about him calling in at all, after 10 minutes he said "Do you know this is John Mayer live on the air?" and Ron and Fez said "Yeah". John said "Why do you throw an f'in parade for Fairplay when he calls then?" I was doing the scoring earlier today, he's got Jessica Simpson, and I get Ron and Fez, so it's close.
paradise: Well Personally I would rather have Ron and Fez.
Jonny: I don't know about that.
paradise: You have a great radio voice, would you ever consider doing full time radio?
Jonny: Raven and I are putting together a demo right now for XM, and I have also got a call from Sirius about doing a wrestling show. So who knows with the merge where it will end up? I would love to do radio; I have done radio in the past before Survivor. I used to do a weekly wrestling radio show. It's fun; I just love paychecks to be completely honest with you. Checks are great, I love signing them, those are the best autographs in the world.
paradise: Speaking of wrestling what is your opinion of the headlines made about wrestlers in the WWE and steroid use?
Jonny: Edge who is major wrestler on WWE right now has admitted to using growth hormone after having neck fusion surgery, the doctor prescribed it. Hurricane is another guy that had an injury and was prescribed steroids for the rebuilding of muscle tissue. It's not like these guys are abusing steroids because they need to be 300 pounds; It's guys that had some serious injuries and the usual call is for doctors to prescribe steroids. They are just looking for other scapegoats because the base-players won't admit it. We all know Mark McGuire is a scumbag; the fact that he is a scumbag is because he won't admit using it.
paradise: You have done a few different reality shows, which one did you enjoy doing the most?
Jonny: You gotta put Survivor number one of course because it was my break out show. It was the show that established the character Jonny Fairplay and it was an unbelievable experience. If you gotta go fun factor, then it has to be Kill Reality because that's me and every reality girl that I ever wanted.
paradise: Do you have any advice for those trying to get on a reality show?
Jonny: No, because I am gonna keep taking their spots. I've done 34 shows so far; as long as they are still casting me I don't need them to cast anyone else.
paradise: So we expect to see you on this seasons Big Brother?
Jonny: I'd love to. I start filming this Saturday for VH1's Where Are They Now. They are also featuring Shandi from America's Top Model and Puck from Real World, and a bunch of people I don't care about.
paradise: So do you find that most of your friends are reality stars? I find that it seems to be a tight inner circle.
Jonny: The problem is once you are an established reality star you have old friends coming out of nowhere to ask for money. Whereas my reality friends that still do appearances have money so they aren't going to ask me for any, plus reality stars are cast for the fact that they are attractive, intelligent, that they are outgoing, and they test us for STD's. So these are the people that I like to have in my life. We all know what it was like to go through these shows, whereas meeting new friends that weren't on a reality show can be like let's play 300 questions. What was it like? Was it real? I would rather have a normal conversation than lets pick Jonny Fairplay's brain.
paradise: Like I am doing right now.
Jonny: Well an interview is different. I want to go out for a beer with my friends and talk about how much I hate Boston Rob.
paradise: Some people may agree with you there.
Jonny: Do you love the fact that Amazing Race ratings doubled after they left? Here's a clue... Entertainment Weekly said it right, you know what Rob and Amber we would miss you more if you actually left.
paradise: Yeah, could be over kill.
Jonny: Yeah, I don't think I have done that. Even though I have done 34 shows I have picked my spots and spread them out. I did some smaller stuff so it's not like you are gonna get 14 weeks of Jonny Fairplay in a row.
paradise: I think sometimes being a couple kills your popularity anyways.
Jonny: Especially if one is completely boring and the other is an asshole.
paradise: Are you watching survivor right now?
Jonny: Of course, I have Rocky in my top ten on myspace.
paradise: Is he your prediction for a winner?
Jonny: Not at all.
paradise: What do you think of this season? Do you like the haves, have-nots?
Jonny: I'd like for them to do that on All Stars 2 and I'd like to be on the tribe that gets the stuff. Other than that no I hate it, I think it's horrible.
paradise: It's boring to watch.
Jonny: I don't think I am allowed to say that.
paradise: Well I can.
Jonny: Exactly, and you know what? I respect your opinion.
paradise: It seems to be stirring up a little bit more now.
Jonny: I've heard some major things that happened for the remainder of the season and it looks like it's going to REALLY pick up. There is something very Fairplayish that people will be very excited about.
paradise: I've read that someone is going to find the idol and bury a fake one in its place.
Jonny: No, no, this is much better than that. That's nothing compared to what I have heard. It is something really, really, really bad.
paradise: Good, that's what I watch reality TV for.
Jonny: And you are going to get it. A lot of people would say it's horrendous; I give it my kudos.
paradise: Well if you are saying it's horrendous, I believe you. You are a good source, very credible there.
Jonny: Well thank you. I like how I am known as the biggest liar but I am pretty much the most honest person I know. What a dichotomy huh?
paradise: What can we expect from Jonny Fairplay in the future? More reality? Anything you want to plug?
Jonny: I got stuff I can't talk about. I have a huge surprise appearance soon that I can't say anything about. I am going to the Reality Convention; I am filming an Indy movie in June at some point. I play the King of the Vampires and have a sword fight at the end. I am in development on a new reality show right now we've pretty much got the demo done, talking to some networks and lots of interest there. Everyone keeps telling me about the rumor of Survivor All Stars 2 that I don't know anything about.
paradise: You would definitely be on it if there were an All Stars 2.
Jonny: I've read on the message boards that if Survivor 16 was All Stars 2 and that was the last season the only fitting end would be for Jonny Fairplay to win, and you know what? I don't know who wrote that but I 100% agree. I think there could be no better end.
paradise: I think some people would be really unhappy about that.
Jonny: You know what?? I might be a nice guy this time. I can't come in with the same game plan can I?
paradise: That would be very disappointing.
Jonny: Well I might be lying right now.
paradise: BBlane would like to thank Jonny for doing this interview with us, he was gracious, fun and very honest. It was a pleasure interviewing him.
