Peb: You promised Yul that you would vote for him if he helped to eliminate Jonathan. That vote was the deciding vote between Yul and Ozzy. Do you think you made the right choice?
Adam: Yul and Ozzy were both deserving of winning but they were COMPLETELY different in their approaches to the game. I always thought, and still today, that Yul was the leader and the "puppet master" of those four. Even if the others did have more input on decisions, they did not let on that that was the case. Whenever I would ask Ozzy about the thoughts of that group he would respond with something along the lines of "I don't know, I just try to win challenges and vote for whoever they tell me to vote for right before tribal" . I give him a lot of respect for the way he played the game as far as the challenges and surviving in general but his social aspect was not adequate. The fact is, Yul and Ozzy needed each other and did great as a team to get to the final two. Yul did great at controlling the game but he was below par in the the challenges and every day survival, which, ironically, is what Ozzy excelled so much at.
I know a lot of people after the show think that Ozzy should have won but, if you think about it, Yul was the fan favorite for most of the season. Furthermore, I think Ozzy became a big fan favorite during the last several weeks because it looked to the public that he was a social person considering he had so much to say in his interviews. Problem is, WE DON'T HEAR THOSE INTERVIEWS AT THE TIME. Most of his talking was to the camera and not amongst the rest of us.
That being said, I told Yul that I would give him my vote if me or any of my Raro people were not in the final vote if he would pull some strings and get Jonathan out before me. I still truly don't think Ozzy could of pulled that off but Yul did. I decided to keep my word and vote Yul. If Yul did not do me that favor then I would of probably voted Ozzy just because he would of not fulfilled my request/offer. It is pretty much a toss up between those two so I decided to keep my word.
Peb: How much was the actual survival of the elements a factor in the game?
Adam: I lost 25 pounds while I was out there so obviously surviving is something we had to deal with constantly. I don't think it effects the game that much though because we all are going through the same experience. It ends up being a level playing field (except for maybe the fact that we split food up evenly even though some of us weighed 100 lbs. while others, like myself, started off over 200 lbs. and are used to eating more food).
Peb: Do they still allow people to bring in a special luxury item from home & if so what was yours? Were there any hygiene products available at all?
Adam: That was N/A to our season, they like to change it up. As far as hygiene, there really wasn't any. Once you are out there for a while and everybody else you are with are in the same boat, you don't tend to think much about it.
Peb: Several people who have gone on Survivor have said that it was a life changing experience. Did you find that to be the case? If yes, how so?
Adam: You definitely learn to not take things for granted as much. You really learn to appreciate the little things in our every day lives. Furthermore, when you go so long without talking to your family and close friends, you really grow to realize their importance in your life.
Peb: Do you think splitting the tribes by race was a good idea? How do you think it impacted the game?
Adam: I don't know if it is a good idea in general or not but I do know that being white in a situation like that can do no good and only could possibly be negative. Reason why I say that is because people of my ethnicity don't have the pressure that minorities have to stick together. A perfect example of that is the fact that Nate got such a hard time for casting votes for Stephanie and Rebecca even though it was a group decision. There were people that were saying that he was being a race traitor. On the flip side, Jonathan, for instance, turned his back on myself, Parvati and Candice. There was not one mention of him being a race traitor that I heard of and it certainly was not brought up during the finale like that whole b.s. of Nate being a traitor. Point is, the other 15 people outside of my original tribe knew going into the game that, being divided by race, they have the pressure and knew they would have to deal with the repercussions if they went against their ethnicity. The five of us did not have that pressure so it was truly every man/woman for him/herself.
Peb: You became close with Candice during the game. What is the status of that relationship now?
Adam: Candice is a great person and we did have a real relationship during the show. However, shortly after we got back from the Cook Islands, our romantic relationship evaporated but our friendship developed. I talk to her on a regular basis and I consider her a great friend of mine.
Peb: Jonathan was a divisive personality on both tribes. What did you think of his style of gameplay? Did you trust him during the game?
Adam: I don't think anybody trusted Jonathan out there. I will give him credit though for playing the game fairly well, for the most part.
Peb: What reality shows do you watch? What are your favorite types of characters?
Adam: My new favorite is "The Bad Girls Club", those girls are bananas. I like any character that will speak their mind and won't hold back.
Peb: There is a rumor that you are dating another CBS reality star. Is this something you would like to confirm or deny?
Adam: Let's just say I met an incredible woman that I am currently dating and enjoy spending every day with. I will leave it at that.
Peb: When the show first started, not many of the fans thought of you as much of a threat. Was that your strategy going in? Going under the radar so to speak? What was your general strategy?
Adam: My strategy was to simply try to get along with everybody. I wanted to stay under the radar but keep the lines of communication open at all times between me and the other contestants. Candice is the only one that I trusted completely throughout the whole experience. Another strategy, once it got down to individual immunity challenges, was to win or get last. I know that might sound strange right off the bat but my thought process was that if I knew I would not win the challenge then second place would be last place cause to do well in a challenge but not win immunity meant that you would be a threat and a good chance you would go home at tribal. For instance, if Ozzy would of not won all of those challenges, he would of gone home after the first one he lost. Another example, if I was not so pathetic during the pole challenge (the first individual immunity challenge), I would of probably gone home instead of Nate since I would of been perceived as a bigger threat.
Peb: Looking back is there anything you would have done differently in the game? Were there any moves that you were particularly proud of?
Adam: I should of not voted Jenny out when we had to make a quick decision and vote a second person out at that tribal. I motioned to Candice to vote Jenny but should of got us both to vote Jonathan. I don't think Jenny would of ended up flipping on us. Reason why, at the time, I did not think Jonathan would of flipped is because I thought he was smart enough to know that after doing the mutiny, he would not possibly get higher then fifth siding with those four. I was taking care of him after the mutiny and he knew with us that he was somewhere between third and fifth place at the time and I was keeping him off the chopping block. It ended up holding true though because he ended at number seven but if he would of not flipped then his worst spot would of been five. I thought he would of realized that but I guess not.
Peb: How surreal was it when they flew your dad in to help with the bucket brigade task? Did having family members there change your perception of anyone or alter the game at all?
Adam: I rarely call him dad because George is my best friend and for him to show up and experience that with me was incredible. He is such a likable guy that I knew that no matter which loved one won the competition, they would of probably picked George (like Parvati's father, Mike did). Every other contestant had very nice/respectable loved ones. I ended up spending the reward with Parvati and Sundra. Her dad and Sundra's mother were very good people.
Peb: What would be your advice for future Survivors? What do you think is the most important thing one needs to do to be the ultimate Survivor?
Adam: Lead but try not to show it, that could very well be your downfall (my buddy JP, for instance). Also, remember that the social aspect is huge. Think about it, if you are around the same people 24 hours a day, every day, and then it is a time to vote one out... wouldn't the person that is not socially in tune with the rest be on the chopping block?
Peb: What are you up to now? What is next for Adam?
Adam: I am in the process of moving from San Diego, where I have been the last 5 years, to LA. I want to get back into sales (preferably medical or pharm) but also get into some acting/modeling. I am also finally taking care of my broken foot that happened out there on the islands (I tend to be a bit stubborn and avoid going to the doctor but finally did and got a MRI and sure enough, broken. Not that it would of changed much with the challenges, Ozzy is definitely a beast.)
Thank you,
Adam
